• Oct. 17, 1972 Born as Marshall Bruce Mathers III in St. Joseph, Missouri to Debbie Mathers and Marshall Bruce Mathers, Jr. His mother nearly dies during his birth.
• 1983 His Uncle Ronnie gives him a copy of Ice T’s Reckless and after listening to it, he decides to become a rapper.
• 1986 Enrolls in Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan, a Detroit suburb. 8 Mile is the name of the street that separates Warren from Detroit.
• 1988 Pens his first rhyme that talks smack about LL Cool J, who’s actually one of his favorite rappers.
• 1993 Begins making appearances at Detroit’s St. Andrew’s Hall which is located in the back-in-the-day Hip-Hop Shop. He is the only white rapper.
• 1996 Releases debut album Infinite but few people notice. Those who do accuse him of ripping off other artists. Those who don’t accuse him of plagiarism, and mock his little-too-late anti-Gulf War lyrics. He sells about five hundred copies from the backseat of his car.
• 1996 Due to the lack of record sales, Marshall gets work as a cook.
• Oct. 1997 Wins second place at the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles.
• Feb. 1998 Signs on with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath imprint.

• March 1998 Timothy White, a Billboard editor, uses his Music to My Ears column to slam Eminem’s lyrics.

• Feb. 21, 2001 Performs the song “Stan” with Elton John at the Grammy Awards ceremony and gives him a big hug.

It is downloaded 380,000 times in its first week and is the second hip hop single in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to debut at #1. “I’ll Be Missing You” by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112 was the first hip hop single to do so.
